Benefits of Mahashivratri

Mahashivratri is an important night for people who are on a spiritual path. It is also meaningful for people who are focused on their careers and family life.

Biologists say that a big step in evolution happened when animals moved from having a horizontal spine to a vertical spine. This change helped human intelligence grow. On the night of Mahashivratri, there is a natural rise of energy in the body. By staying awake and practicing the right mantras and meditation, a person can use this energy to move closer to the Divine.

This rise in energy happens for everyone, even if they do not practice any spiritual discipline (sadhana). But for those who follow yoga or spiritual practices, it is especially important to keep the body upright and not sleep on this night.

For families, Mahashivratri is celebrated as the wedding anniversary of Shiva. For ambitious people, it is seen as the day Shiva defeated his enemies. But in the yogic tradition, Shiva is not seen as a god. He is seen as the first guru, the Adi Guru, who started the science of yoga. The word “Shiva” means “that which is not” or nothingness. If you can let go of your limited sense of self and allow this greater presence to be, you may gain a new and clearer way of seeing life.
